Driving National Standards in Biomedical Engineering for Public Hospitals in Thailand

How a public facilities management organization strengthened patient safety and maintenance quality through ECRI’s Biomedical Engineering Certification (BMEC).

The Challenge

A leading government-affiliated facilities management company, responsible for maintaining medical equipment across Ministry of Public Health hospitals in Thailand, needed a standardized way to evaluate and improve its biomedical engineering (BME) services.
Without a national benchmark, it was difficult to identify service gaps, provide assurance to hospital leadership or align with international safety and accreditation standards.

Solution

To address the gaps, the organization partnered with ECRI to pursue the Biomedical Engineering Certification (BMEC) – a three-year certification program that assesses BME services against global best practices. The process involved comprehensive documentation reviews, on-site audits and evaluations of policies, staffing and maintenance quality.

Impact

In April 2022, the organization achieved ECRI’s BME certification. This milestone demonstrated the organization’s leadership in setting a new national standard for BME excellence. This certification provided assurance to hospital stakeholders, demonstrated cost-effective equipment management and helped attract and develop skilled engineering staff.

A follow-up audit reaffirmed their continued commitment to quality and patient safety, positioning the organization as a national leader in biomedical engineering best practices.
